Kambo In Costa Rica

A single optional application on the morning of day two, a full day before your first ayahuasca night. It has its own screen, its own practitioner, and no detox claim attached. Roughly half of guests choose it, and declining changes nothing about the week or the price.

01 , What Kambo actually is

A frog secretion, a few small burns, and thirty honest minutes

The short answer: Kambo is the secretion of the giant monkey frog. A practitioner makes a few small superficial burns on the skin and applies it. The reaction is fast and physical, peaks within minutes, and settles inside about half an hour.

The frog is Phyllomedusa bicolor, common across the western Amazon, and it is not harmed in the process; it is handled briefly and released. The secretion contains a family of bioactive peptides, which is what produces the acute response, a fast heartbeat, flushing in the face, nausea and often vomiting. None of that is a side effect to be endured quietly; it is the experience, and it is over quickly.

We treat Kambo as preparation rather than as a headline. It is not the reason anyone comes to the Osa, and we would rather you understand it plainly than arrive expecting either a miracle or an ordeal. For the wider context of how it sits alongside the other medicines, see the services overview.

02 , Placement is the point

Why Kambo comes before ayahuasca, never after

A medicine that dehydrates you and raises your heart rate has no business landing near an ayahuasca night. So we put it where it can do its work and then leave the body a full day to recover.

Morning

Day two, on a rested body

You have arrived, eaten, slept, and had your intake. Kambo lands on a body that is ready for it, not one still recovering from travel.

+24h

A full day before ceremony

Never on a ceremony day, never within twenty four hours of one. The gap lets you rehydrate and settle before the first ayahuasca night.

1 : 1

A trained practitioner, one to one

Not a group line-up. One practitioner with you throughout, with the resident physician a room away.

Rest

The afternoon is quiet

Water, electrolytes, a light meal later. Nothing else is scheduled, because the point of day two is to be ready for night three.

The combinations we refuse: Kambo on a ceremony day, Kambo within twenty four hours of one, and Kambo and Bufo in the same week. A fuller account of why the order is the service is on the services page, and the day-by-day sequence is in our dieta guide.

03 , Its own screen

Clearing the ayahuasca screen does not clear you for Kambo

Kambo stresses the cardiovascular system in a specific way, so it has its own set of exclusions, read by the physician, and a yes to ceremony is not automatically a yes to this.

Kambo screening as we run it on the Osa Peninsula, August 2026.
CategoryWhat it means for Kambo
Cardiac historyA full stop. Any heart condition, arrhythmia, or event excludes Kambo outright.
Blood pressureLow or unstable blood pressure excludes it. It is measured on the morning, not just at intake.
DiureticsCurrent diuretic use is an exclusion, because Kambo already shifts fluid hard.
Addison’s / adrenalAddison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency are full stops.
Kidney or liverSerious kidney or liver conditions exclude it.
PregnancyPregnancy or breastfeeding excludes Kambo, as it does ceremony.
Hydration on the dayDehydration defers it. That decision is made the morning of, by the practitioner.
What we do not claim

We make no detox claim for Kambo. The purge is real, but we do not tell you it removes toxins, cleanses organs, boosts immunity or treats disease, because the evidence does not support those statements. What guests report is feeling clearer going into ceremony, and that is the only benefit we will describe. Nothing here is medical advice and no list is exhaustive.

04 , What actually happens

Thirty minutes, described honestly

No adjectives, just the sequence, because the discomfort is much easier when it is not a surprise.

01

The gate

A few small superficial burns, usually on the shoulder or lower leg. It stings briefly, less than most expect. This is called opening the gate.

02

The wave

Within a minute the heart rate climbs, the face flushes and warms, and a strong wave of nausea builds. This is the peak, and it is brief.

03

The purge

Most people vomit. A bowl is right there, the practitioner is beside you, and it passes fast. This is the part guests dread and then describe as the relief.

04

The settle

Within about half an hour it lifts. The points are dressed, you rehydrate, and the rest of the morning is yours to rest quietly.

05 , Choosing it, or not

Half of guests take it. Both choices are correct.

Often a good fit

You might choose Kambo if

You want a clear physical reset before the first ceremony night.
You clear the separate cardiac and blood-pressure screen.
You are comfortable with a short, intense, physical experience.
Skip it without a second thought

You should skip Kambo if

Any exclusion in the screen applies, in which case it is not a choice.
You would rather arrive at ceremony without a physical ordeal first.
You are drawn to it for a detox benefit, which we do not claim exists.

You decide during your intake on day one, with the practitioner and the physician, not months ahead in an application field. Read about Bufo, the other optional medicine, or ayahuasca itself, which is the week.

06 , Questions about Kambo

What people ask before choosing it

What is Kambo?

Kambo is the secretion of the giant monkey frog, Phyllomedusa bicolor, used by several Amazonian peoples. A practitioner makes small superficial burns on the skin and applies the secretion to them. It produces an acute reaction, typically a fast heartbeat, flushing, nausea and often vomiting, that peaks within a few minutes and settles within about half an hour. The frog is not harmed and is released.

Why is Kambo offered before ayahuasca rather than after?

Because it belongs to preparation, not to ceremony. We place the optional application on the morning of day two, a full day before the first ayahuasca night, so the body has recovered and rehydrated. Kambo is never applied on a ceremony day, never within twenty four hours of one, and never on a guest who is dehydrated or has not eaten.

Is Kambo safe, and who should not take it?

Kambo has its own screen, separate from the ayahuasca application. Exclusions include a cardiac history, low or unstable blood pressure, current diuretics, Addison’s disease, serious kidney or liver conditions, epilepsy, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and recent surgery. Dehydration on the morning defers it, and that call is made on the day. It is never combined with Bufo in the same week.

Does Kambo detox the body?

We make no detox claim. The purge is real and often dramatic, but we do not tell you it removes toxins, cleanses organs or treats disease, because the evidence does not support those statements. What guests report is feeling clearer and more settled going into the first ceremony, and that is the only benefit we will describe.

Does Kambo cost extra?

No. Kambo is included in the retreat price whether you take it or not. Nothing here is a line item, because the moment a medicine carries its own price someone starts selling it. Roughly half of guests choose it and declining changes nothing about your week.

How long does a Kambo application take?

The acute phase lasts about thirty to forty-five minutes from application to settling. You will want the rest of the morning quiet, with water and electrolytes, which is exactly why we schedule it on day two with a full rest day rather than on a ceremony day.

Kambo is part of the week, not a decision you owe us now.

Apply for the retreat and a physician reads every answer. You choose Kambo, or not, during your intake on day one, with the practitioner in the room. It costs nothing either way.
