The most intense thing we hold, and the one you cannot ask for. A short 5-MeO-DMT session on the final morning, offered only to guests both the physician and the integration lead independently clear. Roughly one in four. If you are not offered it, you had the full retreat.
The short answer: Bufo is 5-MeO-DMT, a powerful compound historically linked to the Sonoran Desert toad. We use a synthetic, laboratory-grade form, so no animal is involved and the dose is exact. Inhaled, it comes on within seconds and resolves within about twenty minutes.
People conflate it with ayahuasca because both are called plant medicine on the internet. They are not alike. Ayahuasca is a long, narrative, often visual night. 5-MeO-DMT is brief, non-visual for most, and total: a rapid dissolution of the ordinary sense of self that arrives faster than you can brace for it. That suddenness is exactly why it is held the way it is, and why a facilitator supports you physically throughout.
We chose the synthetic form deliberately. Toad secretion varies in potency and its collection raises real welfare and conservation concerns, and a substance this powerful should not have a variable dose. This is consistent with the position taken by conservation-minded practitioners and groups such as the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, whose published work on 5-MeO-DMT is worth reading before you consider it.
Bufo is the one thing at the retreat that is decided entirely for you. Two people have to independently arrive at yes, and either one can quietly say no.
Assesses the medical picture, including how your body handled four ayahuasca nights. A clear ayahuasca screen is not automatically a clear Bufo screen.
Assesses the psychological picture: how grounded you are, whether the week has already given you enough, whether more would help or overwhelm.
They decide separately before they compare. If either hesitates, the answer is no, including for a reason they cannot fully put into words.
You cannot talk your way to a yes, and we will not be persuaded by how much you want it. Wanting it is not a qualification for it.
Why we removed the incentive: Bufo is never priced separately, because a price would give someone a reason to offer it. The two-lead rule only works if nobody in the room benefits from your yes. The wider logic of sequencing and the combinations we refuse is on the services page.
We describe it plainly because the alternative is people bracing for the wrong thing. This is the sequence, start to landing.
One guest, one facilitator, one lying-down space. Your integration lead has already talked it through with you. No group, no audience.
A single inhalation, and within seconds the ordinary sense of self falls away completely. There is no easing into it; the facilitator is holding you before it arrives.
A handful of minutes with no sense of time inside them. Most people have no visuals and no narrative, and little verbal memory of it afterwards.
You come back within fifteen to twenty-five minutes and then rest for the morning with your lead. Nothing else is scheduled, on purpose.
Bufo has the highest bar of the three medicines, because its onset is instant and total. The medical exclusions are firm, and the judgement on top of them is the point.
Cardiac conditions, uncontrolled hypertension, a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar I, epilepsy, and pregnancy. These are firm, the same lines that govern ayahuasca screening.
Even with a clean medical screen, if the four ayahuasca nights left you raw, ungrounded or already full, the answer is no. That is the integration lead’s call.
Bufo and Kambo are never given in the same week, and Bufo never comes before ayahuasca. It is the last thing or it is nothing.
5-MeO-DMT is not a treatment for any condition and we make no medical claims for it. It may not be brought into the United States. The research is early and the samples are small; we cite it with those limits rather than around them. Nothing here is medical advice and no list is exhaustive. Whether Bufo is right for you is not a decision made on a website, or in advance, or by you alone.
If you find yourself wanting Bufo more than the four nights, tell your integration lead, because that is usually worth looking at. Read the ayahuasca page to understand what the week actually is, or who decides.
Bufo refers to 5-MeO-DMT, a powerful psychoactive compound historically associated with the secretion of the Sonoran Desert toad. We use a synthetic, laboratory-grade form so that no animal is involved and the dose is exact. Inhaled, it produces an extremely intense experience that comes on within seconds and largely resolves within fifteen to twenty-five minutes. It is not ayahuasca and the two are nothing alike.
Because it lands very differently after four ayahuasca nights than it does cold, and because it is not right for most people. It is offered on the final morning, only to guests both the physician and the integration lead independently clear, based on how the week actually went. Roughly one guest in four is offered it, and being in the majority who are not is the expected outcome, not a shortfall.
No. Bufo cannot be requested, booked or paid for ahead of time, and wanting it is not a qualification for it. The offer is made on the final morning or not at all. If either the physician or the integration lead has any reservation you will not be offered it, and we do not negotiate that decision.
Bufo carries everything the ayahuasca screen excludes, plus a judgement about your state after four ceremonies. Full stops include cardiac conditions, uncontrolled hypertension, a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar I, epilepsy, and pregnancy. Because the onset is sudden and total, a facilitator holds you physically throughout. It is never combined with Kambo in the same week.
No. When it is offered, it is included in the retreat price, and it is never sold separately. Attaching a price to Bufo would create an incentive to offer it, and the entire point of the two-lead rule is that nobody at the retreat has a reason to want you to say yes.
The acute experience is short, typically fifteen to twenty-five minutes from inhalation to returning, though the onset within it is almost immediate. You then rest for the remainder of the morning with your integration lead before the transfer home. It is scheduled last precisely so nothing follows it but rest.
Compare the other medicines: Ayahuasca, Kambo, or the full services overview.
You are applying for four ayahuasca ceremonies. Whether Bufo is ever offered is settled on day eight by two people who do not benefit from your yes. That is the safeguard, and it is the whole design.
